Dendeng Balado (coconut Milk Braised Beef)
Dendeng Balado is a traditional Padang dish featuring tender beef braised in a rich coconut milk sauce with a spicy kick. This flavorful and aromatic dish is perfect for a hearty meal with steamed rice.
Ingredients
- 1 lb beef, thinly sliced
- 2 cups coconut milk
- 4 shallots, finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 red chilies, sliced
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 1 lemongrass stalk, bruised
- 2 kaffir lime leaves
- 1 tsp tamarind paste
- 1 tsp sugar
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- In a pot, combine coconut milk, shallots, garlic, red chilies, tomatoes, lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaves. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Add the thinly sliced beef to the pot and let it simmer for 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in tamarind paste, sugar, and salt. Continue to simmer for another 30 minutes until the beef is tender and the sauce has thickened.
- Remove the lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves before serving.
