Dhal and Rice Delight is a classic dish from Guyanese cuisine that combines flavorful lentils with aromatic rice, creating a comforting and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup yellow split peas
- 3 cups water
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 2 cups cooked rice
- Salt to taste
- Chopped cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Rinse the split peas and place them in a pot with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes until the peas are tender.
- In a separate pan, heat some oil and add the cumin and mustard seeds. Once they start to sizzle, add the chopped onion and garlic. Sauté until the onions are translucent.
- Add turmeric to the onion mixture and stir well.
- Pour the cooked split peas into the onion mixture and stir to combine. Add salt to taste.
- Serve the dhal over a bed of cooked rice and garnish with chopped cilantro.
