Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow split peas
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • Salt to taste
  • Chopped cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Rinse the split peas and place them in a pot with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes until the peas are tender.
  2. In a separate pan, heat some oil and add the cumin and mustard seeds. Once they start to sizzle, add the chopped onion and garlic. Sauté until the onions are translucent.
  3. Add turmeric to the onion mixture and stir well.
  4. Pour the cooked split peas into the onion mixture and stir to combine. Add salt to taste.
  5. Serve the dhal over a bed of cooked rice and garnish with chopped cilantro.
