Dhal Bhat (tibetan Style Lentil Soup)
Dhal Bhat is a traditional Tibetan-style lentil soup that is popular in Sikkimese cuisine. This hearty and flavorful dish is perfect for a comforting meal, especially during the cold winter months.
Ingredients
- 2 cups red lentils
- 4 cups water
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch ginger, grated
- 1 tomato, diced
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Rinse the lentils thoroughly and drain.
- In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the onions, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until the onions are soft and translucent.
- Add the diced tomatoes and cook until they are soft.
- Stir in the turmeric, cumin powder, coriander powder, and red chili powder. Cook for 2 minutes.
- Add the rinsed lentils to the pot and stir to combine with the spices and vegetables.
- Pour in the water and season with salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let the soup simmer for 30 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and fully cooked.
- Once the lentils are cooked, adjust the seasoning if needed.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
