Dhansak Delight (धनसाक)
Dhansak is a traditional Parsi dish that combines elements of Persian and Gujarati cuisine, resulting in a flavorful and hearty meal. This Dhansak Delight recipe is a perfect way to experience the unique flavors of Parsi cuisine.
Ingredients
- 1 cup red lentils
- 1 cup mixed vegetables (potatoes, carrots, eggplant)
- 1 lb boneless lamb, cut into cubes
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch ginger, grated
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1/2 cup chopped fresh coriander
- 2 tbsp dhansak masala
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 4 cups water
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Wash the red lentils and soak them in water for 30 minutes.
- Heat oil in a large pot and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add the minced garlic and grated ginger, and sauté for a few minutes.
- Add the lamb cubes and cook until they are browned on all sides.
- Stir in the dhansak masala and turmeric powder, and cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Add the soaked lentils, mixed vegetables, chopped tomatoes, and water. Season with salt and bring to a boil.
- Reduce the heat, cover the pot, and simmer for 45-50 minutes or until the lamb is tender and the lentils are cooked.
- Garnish with chopped coriander and serve hot with steamed rice.
