Ingredients

  • 8 fresh Baltic herring fillets
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bunch fresh dill, chopped

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix the white vinegar, water, sugar, and salt until the sugar and salt are dissolved.
  2. Place the herring fillets, red onion, and chopped dill in a glass or plastic container.
  3. Pour the vinegar mixture over the herring, making sure it's completely covered.
  4. Cover the container and refrigerate for at least 6 hours or overnight.
  5. Serve the marinated herring cold, garnished with additional dill and accompanied by dark rye bread.
