Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 2 onions, finely sliced
  • 2 tomatoes, pureed
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2-inch ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup ghee or clarified butter
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Marinate the chicken pieces with yogurt, ginger, garlic, red chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Let it marinate for 1 hour.
  2. In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat ghee and add the sliced onions. Cook until golden brown.
  3. Add the marinated chicken and cook for 10 minutes.
  4. Add the tomato puree, garam masala, cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves. Mix well.
  5. Cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid and let the chicken cook on low heat for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until tender.
  6. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot.
