Dutch Stroopwafels

Dutch Stroopwafels are a delightful treat originating from the Netherlands. These thin waffle cookies are sandwiched with a gooey caramel filling, making them a perfect accompaniment to a cup of coffee or tea.

Dutch Stroopwafels

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast in the warm milk and let it sit for 5 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, softened butter, granulated sugar, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour in the yeast mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms. Cover and let it rise for 15 minutes.
  3. While the dough is rising, prepare the caramel filling by melting the brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon in a saucepan over low heat. Stir until smooth, then set aside.
  4. Divide the dough into small balls and cook them in a preheated waffle iron for about 2 minutes, or until golden brown.
  5. Cut each waffle in half horizontally and spread a generous amount of caramel filling on one half. Top with the other half and press gently to sandwich the filling.
