Empanadas De Carne Picante (spicy Beef Empanadas)
Empanadas de Carne Picante, or Spicy Beef Empanadas, are a delicious and savory dish from Minorcan cuisine. These hand-held pastries are filled with a flavorful and spicy beef mixture, perfect for a snack or a meal on the go.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 package of empanada dough (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Stir in the minced garlic, cumin, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the empanada dough and cut it into circles using a round cutter or a small plate as a guide.
- Place a spoonful of the beef mixture in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape, then crimp the edges with a fork to seal.
- Place the empanadas on the prepared baking sheet, brush the tops with the beaten egg, and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
