Eral Biryani, also known as Mangalorean Prawn Biryani, is a flavorful and aromatic dish from the Dakshina Karnataka Cuisine. This biryani is made with succulent prawns and fragrant spices, creating a delicious one-pot meal.

Eral Biryani (mangalorean Prawn Biryani)

Ingredients

  • 500g prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • 2 cups basmati rice, soaked for 30 minutes
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • 2 tbsp biryani masala
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup mint leaves
  • 1/4 cup coriander leaves
  • 4 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 tbsp ghee
  • 2 tbsp oil

Instructions

  1. Heat ghee and oil in a large pot. Add the sliced onions and sauté until golden brown.
  2. Add the ginger and garlic, and sauté for a minute.
  3. Stir in the prawns and cook for 2-3 minutes until they turn pink.
  4. Add the tomatoes, biryani masala, turmeric powder, red chili powder, mint leaves, and coriander leaves. Cook for 2 minutes.
  5. Layer the soaked rice over the prawn masala. Pour yogurt over the rice.
  6. Pour water over the rice, add salt, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover, and cook for 15-20 minutes until the rice is tender and the prawns are cooked through.
  7. Fluff the biryani gently with a fork and serve hot.
