Eral Curry (mangalorean Prawn Curry)

Ingredients

  • 500g fresh prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, pureed
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 2-3 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • A few curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  2. Add ginger-garlic paste and slit green chilies, and sauté for a minute.
  3. Now, add the tomato puree, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Cook until the oil separates from the masala.
  4. Add the cleaned prawns and mix well. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Pour in the coconut milk, add salt, and let the curry simmer for 5-7 minutes until the prawns are cooked through.
  6. Garnish with curry leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or neer dosa.
