Eral Masala (chettinad Prawn Masala)
Eral Masala, also known as Chettinad Prawn Masala, is a popular dish from the Chettinad cuisine of Tamil Nadu, India. This spicy and flavorful prawn masala is a perfect accompaniment to steamed rice or roti.
Ingredients
- 500g prawns, cleaned and deveined
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 3 tomatoes, pureed
- 1/4 cup coconut milk
- 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tbsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
- 4-5 dry red chilies
- 10-12 curry leaves
- 1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp oil
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds, fennel seeds, dry red chilies, and curry leaves. Sauté for a minute.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Now, add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a couple of minutes.
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Sauté for a minute.
- Pour in the tomato puree and cook until the oil separates from the masala.
- Add the cleaned prawns and coconut milk. Mix well and cook for 5-7 minutes until the prawns are cooked through.
- Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
