Eral Masala, also known as Chettinad Prawn Masala, is a popular dish from the Chettinad cuisine of Tamil Nadu, India. This spicy and flavorful prawn masala is a perfect accompaniment to steamed rice or roti.

Ingredients

  • 500g prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, pureed
  • 1/4 cup coconut milk
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  • 4-5 dry red chilies
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • 1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds, fennel seeds, dry red chilies, and curry leaves. Sauté for a minute.
  2. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  3. Now, add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a couple of minutes.
  4. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Sauté for a minute.
  5. Pour in the tomato puree and cook until the oil separates from the masala.
  6. Add the cleaned prawns and coconut milk. Mix well and cook for 5-7 minutes until the prawns are cooked through.
  7. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
