Eral Masala (mangalorean Prawn Sukka)
Eral Masala, also known as Mangalorean Prawn Sukka, is a delicious and spicy prawn dish from the Karnataka cuisine. It is a popular coastal dish that is bursting with flavors and is perfect to be enjoyed with steamed rice or neer dosa.
Ingredients
- 500g prawns, cleaned and deveined
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 1 tomato, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup grated coconut
- 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 2 tablespoons red chili powder
- 1 tablespoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 4-5 dry red chilies
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 2 tablespoons oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds, dry red chilies, and curry leaves. Sauté for a minute.
- Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Next, add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a couple of minutes until the raw smell disappears.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
- Now, add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for a few minutes.
- Add the cleaned prawns to the masala and cook for 5-7 minutes until they are cooked through.
- Finally, add the grated coconut and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
- Remove from heat and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
