Eral Masala, also known as Mangalorean Prawn Sukka, is a delicious and spicy prawn dish from the Karnataka cuisine. It is a popular coastal dish that is bursting with flavors and is perfect to be enjoyed with steamed rice or neer dosa.

Eral Masala (mangalorean Prawn Sukka)

Ingredients

  • 500g prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 tablespoons red chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 4-5 dry red chilies
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds, dry red chilies, and curry leaves. Sauté for a minute.
  2. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  3. Next, add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a couple of minutes until the raw smell disappears.
  4. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  5. Now, add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for a few minutes.
  6. Add the cleaned prawns to the masala and cook for 5-7 minutes until they are cooked through.
  7. Finally, add the grated coconut and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  8. Remove from heat and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
