Eral Sukka, also known as Mangalorean Prawn Sukka, is a delicious and spicy prawn dish from the Dakshina Karnataka Cuisine. It is a popular coastal dish that is bursting with flavors and is perfect for seafood lovers.

Eral Sukka (mangalorean Prawn Sukka)

Ingredients

  • 500g prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated coconut
  • 1 tbsp tamarind paste
  • 2-3 green chilies, slit
  • 1 inch ginger, finely chopped
  • 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  2. Add the ginger, garlic, and green chilies. Sauté for a few minutes until the raw smell disappears.
  3. Now, add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  4. Next, add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for a couple of minutes.
  5. Add the cleaned prawns and tamarind paste. Mix gently and cook for 5-7 minutes until the prawns are cooked through.
  6. Finally, add the freshly grated coconut and curry leaves. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the flavors are well combined.
  7. Remove from heat and serve hot with steamed rice or neer dosa.
