Eral Thokku, also known as Tangy Jaffna Prawn Curry, is a popular dish in Sri Lankan cuisine. This delicious and spicy prawn curry is cooked in a tangy tomato-based gravy, infused with aromatic spices.

Ingredients

  • 500g prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, pureed
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add fennel seeds and curry leaves. Sauté for a minute.
  2. Add chopped onions and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  3. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for 2 minutes.
  4. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and cumin powder. Sauté for a minute.
  5. Pour in the tomato puree and cook until the oil separates.
  6. Add the prawns and coconut milk. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until the prawns are cooked through.
  7. Season with salt and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
