Falafel
Falafel is a delicious and popular Middle Eastern dish made from ground chickpeas or fava beans, mixed with herbs and spices, and then formed into small patties or balls. It is typically deep-fried and served in pita bread or with a variety of dips and salads.
Ingredients
- 1 cup dried chickpeas, soaked overnight
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 2-3 tbsp all-purpose flour
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- Drain the soaked chickpeas and pat them dry with paper towels.
- In a food processor, combine the chickpeas, onion, garlic, parsley, cilantro, cumin, coriander, cayenne pepper, salt, and baking soda. Pulse until the mixture is finely ground but not pureed.
- Transfer the mixture to a bowl and stir in the flour. The mixture should hold together when squeezed into a ball.
- Form the mixture into small balls or patties and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the falafel in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- Remove the falafel from the oil and drain on paper towels.
- Serve the falafel hot with pita bread, hummus, tahini sauce, and your favorite salads.
