Falafel

Falafel is a delicious and popular Middle Eastern dish made from ground chickpeas or fava beans, mixed with herbs and spices, and then formed into small patties or balls. It is typically deep-fried and served in pita bread or with a variety of dips and salads.

Falafel

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried chickpeas, soaked overnight
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 2-3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Drain the soaked chickpeas and pat them dry with paper towels.
  2. In a food processor, combine the chickpeas, onion, garlic, parsley, cilantro, cumin, coriander, cayenne pepper, salt, and baking soda. Pulse until the mixture is finely ground but not pureed.
  3. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and stir in the flour. The mixture should hold together when squeezed into a ball.
  4. Form the mixture into small balls or patties and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the falafel in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  6. Remove the falafel from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  7. Serve the falafel hot with pita bread, hummus, tahini sauce, and your favorite salads.
