Festival Goat Curry (tihar Khasi)
Festival Goat Curry, also known as Tihar Khasi, is a traditional Nepalese dish often prepared during the festival of Tihar. This rich and aromatic curry is made with tender goat meat and a blend of fragrant spices, making it a perfect dish to celebrate special occasions.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs goat meat, cut into pieces
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 4 tomatoes, pureed
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 inch ginger, grated
- 2-3 green chilies, slit
- 1/2 cup yogurt
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 4-5 whole cloves
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add cumin seeds, bay leaves, cinnamon stick, and whole cloves. Sauté until fragrant.
- Add chopped onions and cook until golden brown.
- Stir in minced garlic, grated ginger, and green chilies. Cook for a few minutes.
- Add the goat meat and brown on all sides.
- Pour in the tomato puree and cook for 5 minutes.
- Stir in turmeric, coriander, cumin, and red chili powders. Cook for another 5 minutes.
- Whisk the yogurt and add it to the pot. Stir well to combine.
- Pour in enough water to cover the meat. Season with salt and bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the meat is tender.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
