Filipino Beef Steak (bistek Tagalog)

Filipino Beef Steak, also known as Bistek Tagalog, is a popular dish in Guamanian cuisine. It features thinly sliced beef marinated and cooked in a flavorful sauce, typically served with steamed rice.

Filipino Beef Steak (bistek Tagalog)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb thinly sliced beef sirloin
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup calamansi juice (or lemon juice as a substitute)
  • 1 large onion, sliced into rings
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons cooking oil

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, calamansi juice, garlic, and ground black pepper. Marinate the beef in this mixture for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Heat the cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Sauté the onion rings until they are translucent. Remove the onions from the pan and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, sear the marinated beef slices for about 2 minutes on each side. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside.
  4. Pour the remaining marinade into the pan and bring it to a simmer. Add the sautéed onions back into the pan.
  5. Return the beef to the pan and cook for an additional 5 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and the beef to cook through.
  6. Once the beef is cooked to your desired doneness and the sauce has thickened, remove the pan from the heat.
  7. Transfer the beef steak to a serving platter and pour the sauce and onions on top.
  8. Serve hot with steamed rice.
