Fish Ambot Tik (goan Style Fish Curry)

Ingredients

  • 500g fish (preferably kingfish or mackerel)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3-4 green chilies, slit
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1/2 cup tamarind pulp
  • 2-3 sprigs of curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil

Instructions

  1. Marinate the fish with turmeric powder and salt. Set aside for 15 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and fenugreek seeds. Once they splutter, add chopped onions, green chilies, ginger, and garlic. Saute until the onions turn golden brown.
  3. Add red chili powder and saute for a minute. Then, add tamarind pulp and 1 cup of water. Bring it to a boil.
  4. Gently slide in the marinated fish pieces and curry leaves. Cover and cook for 10-12 minutes on medium heat.
  5. Once the fish is cooked, adjust the seasoning and consistency of the curry. Simmer for a couple of minutes and then turn off the heat.
  6. Serve hot with steamed rice or crusty bread.
