Fish in Mustard Gravy (Machha Besara) is a traditional Odia dish that features tender fish cooked in a flavorful mustard-based gravy. This dish is a perfect blend of spices and tangy mustard, making it a popular choice for seafood lovers.
Ingredients
- 500g fish (preferably Rohu or Catla)
- 3 tbsp mustard paste
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 2-3 green chilies, slit
- 1/2 cup mustard oil
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- Salt to taste
- Coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Marinate the fish with turmeric powder and salt. Set aside for 10 minutes.
- Heat mustard oil in a pan and fry the marinated fish until golden brown. Remove and keep aside.
- In the same pan, add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add chopped tomatoes, green chilies, and red chili powder. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
- Add mustard paste and sauté for a few minutes.
- Pour in 2 cups of water and bring it to a boil. Add the fried fish and simmer for 5-7 minutes.
- Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
