Fish In Mustard Gravy (machha Besara)

Ingredients

  • 500g fish (preferably Rohu or Catla)
  • 3 tbsp mustard paste
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 2-3 green chilies, slit
  • 1/2 cup mustard oil
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Marinate the fish with turmeric powder and salt. Set aside for 10 minutes.
  2. Heat mustard oil in a pan and fry the marinated fish until golden brown. Remove and keep aside.
  3. In the same pan, add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes, green chilies, and red chili powder. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
  5. Add mustard paste and sauté for a few minutes.
  6. Pour in 2 cups of water and bring it to a boil. Add the fried fish and simmer for 5-7 minutes.
  7. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
