Fish in Mustard Sauce (Macha Besara) is a traditional Oriya dish that features tender fish cooked in a flavorful mustard sauce. This dish is a perfect blend of spices and tangy mustard, making it a delightful addition to any meal.
Ingredients
- 4 pieces of fish (such as Rohu or Catla)
- 2 tablespoons mustard seeds
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2-3 green chilies, slit
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 2-3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/2 cup water
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons mustard oil
Instructions
- Grind the mustard seeds into a fine paste using a mortar and pestle.
- Heat mustard oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add chopped onions and green chilies. Saute until the onions turn golden brown.
- Add the garlic and saute for a minute. Then, add the mustard paste, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Gently add the fish pieces to the pan and coat them with the mustard sauce. Pour water into the pan, cover, and cook for 10-12 minutes or until the fish is cooked through.
- Once done, remove from heat and serve hot with steamed rice.
