Fish Soup (sere)
Fish Soup, also known as Sere, is a traditional Belizean dish that is bursting with flavor and packed with fresh seafood. This light and fragrant soup is a staple in Belizean cuisine and is perfect for a warm and comforting meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb white fish fillets, cut into chunks
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 bell pepper, chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 cup coconut milk
- 3 cups fish or vegetable broth
- 2 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped
- 1 scotch bonnet pepper, whole
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large pot, sauté the onion, garlic, and bell pepper until softened.
- Add the tomatoes and cook for a few minutes until they start to break down.
- Pour in the coconut milk and fish or vegetable broth. Bring to a simmer.
- Add the fish chunks, whole scotch bonnet pepper, and cilantro. Simmer for 15-20 minutes until the fish is cooked through.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Remove the scotch bonnet pepper before serving.
