Fish Sour Curry (sri Lankan Fish Ambul Thiyal)
Fish Sour Curry, also known as Sri Lankan Fish Ambul Thiyal, is a traditional dish from Sri Lankan cuisine that is bursting with tangy and spicy flavors. This dish is a perfect combination of tender fish, aromatic spices, and the sourness of goraka fruit, creating a unique and delicious curry.
Ingredients
- 500g fish (preferably tuna or mackerel)
- 1 cup goraka (dried gamboge) pieces
- 1 onion, sliced
- 2-3 green chilies, sliced
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 1-inch pandan leaf (rampe)
- 1-inch cinnamon stick
- 1 tsp fenugreek seeds
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tbsp coriander powder
- 1/2 cup thick coconut milk
- Salt to taste
- Water
Instructions
- First, clean and cut the fish into medium-sized pieces. Set aside.
- In a large pot, combine the goraka pieces, sliced onion, green chilies, curry leaves, pandan leaf, cinnamon stick, fenugreek seeds, mustard seeds, turmeric powder, chili powder, coriander powder, and salt.
- Add water just enough to cover the ingredients and bring it to a boil.
- Once boiling, add the fish pieces and cook over medium heat until the fish is cooked and the curry thickens.
- Finally, add the thick coconut milk, simmer for a few minutes, and remove from heat.
