Fish Tamarind Curry (chepala Pulusu)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb fish (preferably rohu or catla)
  • 2 tbsp tamarind paste
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2-3 green chilies, slit
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cups water

Instructions

  1. Marinate the fish with turmeric and salt. Set aside for 10 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Add ginger, garlic, and green chilies. Sauté for a few minutes.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  5. Add red chili powder, coriander powder, and tamarind paste. Mix well.
  6. Pour water and bring the mixture to a boil.
  7. Gently add the marinated fish pieces and curry leaves. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the fish is cooked and the curry thickens.
  8. Adjust the seasoning and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
