Fish Tamarind Stew (chepa Pulusu)

Ingredients

  • 500g fish (preferably a firm white fish like cod or tilapia), cut into pieces
  • 1 lemon-sized ball of tamarind, soaked in 1 cup of water
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3-4 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they start to splutter, add fenugreek seeds and curry leaves.
  2. Add chopped onions and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  3. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute.
  4. Now, add the chopped tomato and cook until it turns mushy.
  5. Strain the tamarind water into the pan, discarding the pulp. Add red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. Gently place the fish pieces into the stew, ensuring they are submerged in the liquid. Cover and cook for 10-15 minutes or until the fish is cooked through.
  7. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
