Fish Tamarind Stew, also known as Chepala Pulusu, is a traditional Andhra cuisine dish that is bursting with tangy and spicy flavors. This stew is made with fish, tamarind, and a blend of aromatic spices, making it a perfect comfort food for any day.

Fish Tamarind Stew (chepala Pulusu)

Ingredients

  • 500g fish (preferably rohu or catla)
  • 1 lemon-sized tamarind ball
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3-4 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • 3-4 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Soak the tamarind in 1 cup of warm water and extract the juice.
  2. Clean and wash the fish pieces. Marinate with turmeric and salt, and set aside for 10 minutes.
  3. Heat oil in a deep pan and add mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds. Once they splutter, add the chopped onions and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  4. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute. Then, add the chopped tomato and cook until it turns mushy.
  5. Now, add red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  6. Pour in the tamarind extract and bring it to a boil. Add the marinated fish pieces and cook for 8-10 minutes on medium heat.
  7. Once the fish is cooked, add curry leaves and simmer for another 5 minutes.
  8. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and remove from heat.
