Ingredients

  • 500g white fish fillets, such as cod or haddock
  • 1kg potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 50g butter
  • 50g all-purpose flour
  • 500ml milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of a greased baking dish.
  3. Place the fish fillets on top of the potatoes, then add a layer of sliced onions.
  4. Top with the remaining sliced potatoes.
  5. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to make a roux.
  6. Gradually whisk in the milk until the sauce is smooth and thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. Pour the sauce over the layered ingredients in the baking dish.
  8. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender.
  10. Serve the Fiskapai hot, with a side of steamed vegetables or a fresh salad.
