These Five-Spice Tofu and Vegetable Lettuce Cups are a delicious and healthy dish inspired by Chinese Buddhist Cuisine. The combination of savory tofu and crisp vegetables wrapped in fresh lettuce leaves makes for a light and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 block of firm tofu, drained and cubed
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 red bell pepper, diced
- 1 cup shredded carrots
- 1 cup sliced shiitake mushrooms
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
- 1 head of butter lettuce, leaves separated
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine the cubed tofu, soy sauce, and Chinese five-spice powder. Toss to coat the tofu evenly.
- Heat the sesame oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the marinated tofu and cook until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the red bell pepper, carrots, mushrooms, garlic, and ginger. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are tender.
- Return the tofu to the skillet and add the hoisin sauce. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, stirring to combine all the ingredients.
- Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the chopped cilantro.
- To serve, spoon the tofu and vegetable mixture into the lettuce leaves, creating individual cups.
