Flavorful Kadlekalu Usli (Horse Gram Stir-Fry)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups horse gram (kadlekalu)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoons grated coconut
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash and soak the horse gram in water for 4-5 hours or overnight.
  2. Pressure cook the soaked horse gram with salt and enough water for 3-4 whistles or until soft. Drain any excess water and set aside.
  3. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and asafoetida. Once the seeds splutter, add curry leaves, green chilies, and onions. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  4. Add the cooked horse gram and grated coconut. Mix well and stir-fry for 5-7 minutes.
  5. Adjust salt to taste and remove from heat.
