Flavorful Keerai Kootu
Keerai Kootu is a traditional South Indian dish that is not only delicious but also packed with nutrients. This flavorful dish is made with a combination of lentils and spinach, making it a wholesome and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup toor dal (split pigeon peas)
- 3 cups chopped spinach (keerai)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 2-3 green chilies, slit
- 1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 2-3 dry red chilies
- 2-3 garlic cloves, minced
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp oil
- Water
Instructions
- Pressure cook the toor dal with turmeric powder and water until soft.
- In a separate pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, and dry red chilies. Sauté until the seeds splutter.
- Add chopped onions, green chilies, and garlic. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
- Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
- Add the chopped spinach and cook until it wilts.
- Mash the cooked dal and add it to the spinach mixture. Add salt to taste and simmer for a few minutes.
- Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
