Fragrant Spicy Tofu (Xiāng Là Dòufu)
Xiāng Là Dòufu, or Fragrant Spicy Tofu, is a popular dish in Tianjin Cuisine known for its bold flavors and spicy kick. This dish is perfect for tofu lovers and those who enjoy a bit of heat in their meals.
Ingredients
- 1 block of firm tofu, cut into cubes
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
- 2 green onions, chopped
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 tablespoon Sichuan peppercorns
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon chili bean paste
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 cup vegetable broth
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Heat the vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the garlic, ginger, and green onions, and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the red bell pepper and Sichuan peppercorns, and stir-fry for another 2-3 minutes.
- Push the vegetables to the side of the wok and add the tofu cubes. Cook for 3-4 minutes until lightly browned.
- In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, chili bean paste, sugar, vegetable broth, and cornstarch. Pour this sauce over the tofu and vegetables.
- Stir gently to coat the tofu and vegetables with the sauce. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens.
- Adjust the seasoning with salt if needed.
- Transfer the Fragrant Spicy Tofu to a serving dish and garnish with additional chopped green onions if desired.
