Fragrant Spicy Tofu (Xiāng Là Dòufu)

Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu, cut into cubes
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon Sichuan peppercorns
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chili bean paste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the garlic, ginger, and green onions, and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Add the red bell pepper and Sichuan peppercorns, and stir-fry for another 2-3 minutes.
  4. Push the vegetables to the side of the wok and add the tofu cubes. Cook for 3-4 minutes until lightly browned.
  5. In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, chili bean paste, sugar, vegetable broth, and cornstarch. Pour this sauce over the tofu and vegetables.
  6. Stir gently to coat the tofu and vegetables with the sauce. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  7. Adjust the seasoning with salt if needed.
  8. Transfer the Fragrant Spicy Tofu to a serving dish and garnish with additional chopped green onions if desired.
