Franconian Beer Braised Beef Stew

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs beef stew meat, cut into chunks
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 3 carrots, sliced
  • 3 potatoes, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 bottle of Franconian beer
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Season the beef chunks with salt and pepper, then brown them in the pot in batches. Remove the beef and set aside.
  2. Add the chopped onions to the pot and cook until they are soft and translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and garlic, stirring to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  4. Pour in the Franconian beer and beef broth, stirring to combine. Add the browned beef back into the pot, along with the bay leaves. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then cover and reduce the heat to low. Let the stew simmer for 1.5-2 hours, or until the beef is tender.
  5. Add the sliced carrots and diced potatoes to the stew, and continue to simmer for an additional 30 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.
  6. Season the stew with salt and pepper to taste, then serve hot.
