Franconian Onion Tart
Franconian Onion Tart is a traditional dish from the Franconian region of Germany. This savory tart is made with a flaky pastry crust and a rich, flavorful filling of caramelized onions, eggs, and cream.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 3 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup heavy cream
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press the mixture into the bottom and up the sides of a tart pan.
- In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized, about 20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and heavy cream. Season with salt and pepper.
- Spoon the caramelized onions into the tart crust. Pour the egg and cream mixture over the onions.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, or until the filling is set and the crust is golden brown.
