Ingredients

  • 8 slices of bread
  • 8 slices of ham
  • 8 slices of Gruyère cheese
  • 4 tablespoons of butter
  • 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups of milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the stovetop to medium heat.
  2. Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread.
  3. Place a slice of ham and a slice of cheese on the unbuttered side of 4 slices of bread. Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side out.
  4. In a saucepan, melt the remaining butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
  5. Gradually whisk in the milk and cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Place the sandwiches in a large skillet and cook until golden brown on both sides.
  7. Transfer the sandwiches to a baking dish and pour the sauce over the top.
  8. Broil in the oven for 2-3 minutes, until the sauce is bubbly and golden.
  9. Serve hot and enjoy!
