French Croque Monsieur
The French Croque Monsieur is a classic sandwich that originated in Western Europe. It is made with ham, cheese, and bread, and is typically served hot.
Ingredients
- 8 slices of bread
- 8 slices of ham
- 8 slices of Gruyère cheese
- 4 tablespoons of butter
- 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
- 2 cups of milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the stovetop to medium heat.
- Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread.
- Place a slice of ham and a slice of cheese on the unbuttered side of 4 slices of bread. Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side out.
- In a saucepan, melt the remaining butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in the milk and cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens. Season with salt and pepper.
- Place the sandwiches in a large skillet and cook until golden brown on both sides.
- Transfer the sandwiches to a baking dish and pour the sauce over the top.
- Broil in the oven for 2-3 minutes, until the sauce is bubbly and golden.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
