French Onion Soup (Soupe à l'oignon)
Soupe à l'oignon, or French Onion Soup, is a classic dish from Western European cuisine. This hearty soup is made with caramelized onions, beef broth, and topped with crusty bread and melted cheese.
Ingredients
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 6 cups beef broth
- 1 cup dry white wine
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 slices of baguette
- 1 1/2 cups grated Gruyère cheese
Instructions
- In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 30 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the caramelized onions and stir to coat.
- Pour in the beef broth and white wine. Bring to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Preheat the broiler. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls. Top each bowl with a slice of baguette and a generous amount of Gruyère cheese.
- Place the bowls under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
