Ingredients

  • 2 cups split and skinned black lentils (urad dal)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup fresh coriander leaves, chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Soak the lentils in water for 4-5 hours, then drain and grind them into a coarse paste without adding water.
  2. Transfer the lentil paste to a bowl and add chopped onion, green chilies, ginger, coriander leaves, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, red chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well.
  3. Heat oil in a deep pan for frying.
  4. Take a small portion of the lentil mixture and shape it into a patty. Gently slide it into the hot oil and fry until golden and crispy.
  5. Remove the fried lentil patties onto a paper towel to drain excess oil.
  6. Serve hot with chutney or sauce of your choice.
