Frisian Potato Dumplings (Fryske Aardappelbûterballen)
Fryske Aardappelbûterballen, or Frisian Potato Dumplings, are a traditional dish from the Frisian cuisine, known for its hearty and comforting flavors. These dumplings are made with mashed potatoes and filled with a savory buttery center, making them a delicious and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Boil the diced potatoes in a pot of salted water until tender, then drain and mash them.
- In a small saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Stir in the flour to make a roux, then cook for 2-3 minutes until golden.
- Take a small portion of the mashed potatoes and form it into a ball. Make an indentation in the center and place a small amount of the butter-flour mixture inside. Close the ball to seal the filling inside, shaping it into a smooth dumpling.
- Repeat the process with the remaining mashed potatoes and filling mixture to make the potato dumplings.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a gentle boil. Carefully drop the dumplings into the water and cook for about 10-12 minutes, or until they float to the surface.
- Remove the dumplings with a slotted spoon and drain them on a paper towel.
- Serve the Fryske Aardappelbûterballen hot, sprinkled with salt and pepper to taste.
