Gahori Tenga is a traditional Assamese mutton stew that is known for its tangy and flavorful taste. This dish is a staple in Assamese cuisine and is often enjoyed with steamed rice.
Ingredients
- 500g mutton, cut into pieces
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 1 onion, sliced
- 2 green chilies, slit
- 1-inch ginger, grated
- 1 teaspoon mustard oil
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
- 4-5 cups water
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Heat mustard oil in a pot and add cumin seeds and fenugreek seeds. Let them splutter.
- Add sliced onions, green chilies, and grated ginger. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
- Add the mutton pieces and turmeric powder. Cook until the mutton is browned.
- Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft.
- Add water, salt, and cubed potatoes. Cover and cook until the mutton and potatoes are tender.
- Once done, adjust the seasoning and serve hot with steamed rice.
