Galet Kyaw (sweet And Sour Tofu)
Galet Kyaw, also known as Sweet and Sour Tofu, is a popular dish in Burmese Chinese cuisine. This flavorful and tangy dish is made with crispy tofu and a sweet and sour sauce, creating a perfect balance of flavors.
Ingredients
- 1 block of firm tofu, cut into cubes
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 red bell pepper, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 1 onion, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup pineapple chunks
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 3 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch dissolved in 2 tablespoons water
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Press the tofu cubes between paper towels to remove excess moisture.
- Coat the tofu cubes in cornstarch, shaking off any excess.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and cook until crispy and golden brown. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add a little more oil if needed and sauté the garlic, onion, and bell peppers until they are slightly softened.
- Add the pineapple chunks to the skillet and cook for a few minutes.
- In a small bowl, mix together the ketchup, rice vinegar, soy sauce, brown sugar, and the cornstarch-water mixture. Pour the sauce into the skillet and stir until it thickens.
- Return the crispy tofu to the skillet and toss to coat with the sweet and sour sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve the Galet Kyaw hot with steamed rice.
