Ghormeh (spiced Lamb And Chickpea Curry)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb lamb, cut into cubes
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  3. Add the lamb cubes to the pot and brown on all sides.
  4. Stir in the turmeric, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper. Cook for 2 minutes to toast the spices.
  5. Add the diced tomatoes, chickpeas, and broth to the pot. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the lamb is tender.
  7. Adjust the seasoning if needed and serve the Ghormeh hot, garnished with fresh cilantro.
