Ghormeh (spiced Lamb And Chickpea Curry)
Ghormeh is a traditional Tajik dish that features tender spiced lamb and hearty chickpeas in a flavorful curry sauce. This dish is perfect for a cozy family dinner or a special occasion.
Ingredients
- 1 lb lamb, cut into cubes
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
- Add the lamb cubes to the pot and brown on all sides.
- Stir in the turmeric, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper. Cook for 2 minutes to toast the spices.
- Add the diced tomatoes, chickpeas, and broth to the pot. Season with salt and pepper.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the lamb is tender.
- Adjust the seasoning if needed and serve the Ghormeh hot, garnished with fresh cilantro.
