Goan Prawn Balchão

Ingredients

  • 500g prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • 10-12 dry red chilies
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Grind the dry red chilies and cumin seeds to a fine paste using a food processor or mortar and pestle.
  2. Marinate the prawns with turmeric powder and a pinch of salt for 15 minutes.
  3. Heat oil in a pan and sauté the chopped onion, garlic, and ginger until golden brown.
  4. Add the ground chili paste and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add the marinated prawns and cook for 5 minutes.
  6. Pour in the vinegar and simmer for another 10 minutes until the prawns are cooked and the sauce thickens.
  7. Adjust the seasoning and serve hot with steamed rice or crusty bread.
