Golabki (cabbage Roll Delight)
Golabki, also known as Cabbage Roll Delight, is a traditional dish from Central European cuisine. These delicious cabbage rolls are filled with a flavorful mixture of ground meat, rice, and spices, then simmered in a savory tomato sauce. They are a comforting and satisfying meal that is perfect for a cozy night in.
Ingredients
- 1 head of cabbage
- 1 pound ground meat (beef, pork, or a combination)
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup beef or vegetable broth
Instructions
- Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a boil. Carefully add the whole head of cabbage to the boiling water and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the outer leaves are softened. Remove the cabbage from the water and carefully peel off the softened leaves. Set aside to cool.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, cooked rice, chopped onion, egg, salt, pepper, and paprika. Mix well to combine.
- Take a cabbage leaf and place a scoop of the meat mixture in the center. Roll the leaf around the filling, tucking in the sides as you roll, to create a neat package. Repeat with the remaining cabbage leaves and filling.
- In a large pot, combine the tomato sauce and broth. Place the cabbage rolls in the pot, seam side down. Bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and cook for 45-50 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through.
- Serve the golabki hot, spooning some of the tomato sauce over the top.
