Golubtsi (cabbage Roll Delight)
Golubtsi, also known as Cabbage Roll Delight, is a classic dish in Eastern European cuisine. These savory cabbage rolls are filled with a flavorful mixture of ground meat, rice, and spices, then simmered in a rich tomato sauce. They are a comforting and satisfying meal that is perfect for a cozy night in.
Ingredients
- 1 head of cabbage
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup uncooked rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage and place the whole head in the boiling water. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until the outer leaves are softened. Remove the cabbage from the water and carefully peel off the softened leaves. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, uncooked rice, chopped onion, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
- Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto the center of each cabbage leaf. Roll the leaf, tucking in the sides, to form a tight roll.
- In a separate pot, mix the tomato sauce and diced tomatoes. Place the cabbage rolls in the pot, seam side down. Pour the tomato mixture over the rolls.
- Cover and simmer over low heat for 1 hour, or until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through.
