Ingredients

  • 1 head of cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and blanch them in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes. Remove and set aside to cool.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onion, egg, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
  3. Place a spoonful of the beef mixture onto each cabbage leaf and roll them up, tucking in the sides as you go.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together the tomato sauce, brown sugar, and lemon juice. Pour half of the sauce into the bottom of a large pot.
  5. Arrange the cabbage rolls in the pot, then pour the remaining sauce over the top.
  6. Cover and simmer over low heat for 1 hour, or until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through.
