Greek Baklava (Μπακλαβάς)

Ingredients

  • 1 package (16 ounces) phyllo dough
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped mixed nuts (such as walnuts, pistachios, and almonds)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix together the chopped nuts and cinnamon.
  3. Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
  4. Layer 10 sheets of phyllo dough in the prepared dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter before adding the next.
  5. Sprinkle a layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo dough.
  6. Continue layering 5 sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each sheet with butter, and sprinkling with the nut mixture, until all the nut mixture is used.
  7. Layer the remaining phyllo sheets on top, again brushing each sheet with butter.
  8. Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
  10. While the baklava is baking, make the syrup by combining the sugar, water, and honey in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the vanilla extract, and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and let the syrup simmer for 10 minutes.
  11. Once the baklava is done, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over the hot baklava. Let it cool completely before serving.
