Ingredients
- 1 package (16 ounces) phyllo dough
- 1 1/2 cups chopped mixed nuts (such as walnuts, pistachios, and almonds)
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix together the chopped nuts and cinnamon.
- Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
- Layer 10 sheets of phyllo dough in the prepared dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter before adding the next.
- Sprinkle a layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo dough.
- Continue layering 5 sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each sheet with butter, and sprinkling with the nut mixture, until all the nut mixture is used.
- Layer the remaining phyllo sheets on top, again brushing each sheet with butter.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the baklava is baking, make the syrup by combining the sugar, water, and honey in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the vanilla extract, and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and let the syrup simmer for 10 minutes.
- Once the baklava is done, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over the hot baklava. Let it cool completely before serving.
