Greek Koulouri (Κουλούρι)
Κουλούρι (Greek Koulouri) is a traditional Macedonian bread ring, often enjoyed as a breakfast or snack. It has a unique chewy texture and is usually topped with sesame seeds.
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 packet dry yeast
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup sesame seeds
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, olive oil, salt, and the yeast mixture. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.
- Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll each piece into a rope. Shape the ropes into rings and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Brush the rings with water and sprinkle sesame seeds on top.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
- Let the koulouri cool on a wire rack before serving.
