Greek Moussaka (greek Moussaka)
Greek Moussaka is a classic Balkan dish made with layers of eggplant, minced meat, and creamy béchamel sauce. This hearty casserole is a staple in Greek cuisine and is perfect for a comforting family meal.
Ingredients
- 2 large eggplants, sliced lengthwise
- 1 lb ground lamb or beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes
- 1/2 cup red wine
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Olive oil for frying
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Sprinkle the eggplant slices with salt and let them sit for 15 minutes to release excess moisture. Pat dry with paper towels.
- Heat some olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the eggplant slices until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the ground meat and cook until browned. Add the onion and garlic, and cook until softened.
- Pour in the diced tomatoes and red wine. Season with cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes.
- In a separate saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to make a roux. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Cook until the sauce thickens. Season with salt and pepper.
- Arrange half of the eggplant slices in a greased baking dish. Spoon the meat mixture over the eggplant. Top with the remaining eggplant slices. Pour the béchamel sauce over the top and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Let the moussaka rest for 10 minutes before serving.
