Greek Pastitsio (Παστίτσιο)
Παστίτσιο (Greek Pastitsio) is a classic Macedonian dish that combines layers of pasta, savory meat sauce, and creamy béchamel sauce. It's a comforting and hearty meal that is perfect for family gatherings and special occasions.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ziti or penne pasta
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 can (14 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup red wine (optional)
- 3 cups milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Cook the pasta according to package instructions, then drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, and cook until softened.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, cinnamon, nutmeg, and red wine (if using). Simmer for 10 minutes, then remove from heat.
- In a separate saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour to create a roux, then gradually whisk in the milk. Cook until the sauce thickens, then remove from heat and stir in half of the Parmesan cheese and beaten eggs. Season with salt and pepper.
- Layer half of the cooked pasta in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Spread the meat sauce over the pasta, then top with the remaining pasta. Pour the béchamel sauce over the top and sprinkle with the remaining Parmesan cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbling. Let it cool for 10 minutes before serving.
