Green Plantain Lasagna (Lasagna de Plátano Maduro)
Lasagna de Plátano Maduro, or Green Plantain Lasagna, is a traditional Dominican dish that puts a delicious twist on the classic Italian lasagna. Instead of pasta, this recipe uses ripe plantains to create layers of savory goodness.
Ingredients
- 4 ripe green plantains, peeled and sliced lengthwise
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 bell peppers, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions, bell peppers, and garlic, and cook until softened.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned. Season with oregano, cumin, salt, and pepper.
- Stir in the tomato sauce and simmer for 5 minutes.
- Layer the sliced plantains in a greased baking dish, followed by the meat mixture and a sprinkle of both cheeses. Repeat the layers, ending with a layer of cheese on top.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
- Let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
