Grilled Ham And Cheese Sandwich (croque Monsieur)

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of bread
  • 4 slices of ham
  • 100g Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the stovetop grill or a non-stick skillet over medium heat.
  2. Spread butter on one side of each bread slice.
  3. Place 2 slices of bread, buttered side down, on a clean surface.
  4. Layer each slice with 2 slices of ham and a generous amount of grated Gruyère cheese.
  5. Top with the remaining bread slices, buttered side up.
  6. Grill the sandwiches for 3-4 minutes on each side, until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.
  7. While the sandwiches are grilling, prepare the béchamel sauce by melting the butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  8. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until it turns golden brown.
  9. Gradually whisk in the milk and cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens.
  10. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  11. Once the sandwiches are grilled, place them on serving plates and pour the béchamel sauce over the top.
