Gujarati-style Dal Makhani

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole black lentils (urad dal)
  • 1/4 cup red kidney beans (rajma)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, pureed
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 green chili, slit
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons cream
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cups water

Instructions

  1. Wash and soak the black lentils and kidney beans in water for 4-6 hours.
  2. Pressure cook the soaked lentils and kidney beans with 2 cups of water, salt, and turmeric powder for 6-7 whistles or until they are soft and well cooked.
  3. In a separate pan, heat butter and sauté the chopped onions until they turn golden brown.
  4. Add the ginger, garlic, and green chili. Sauté for a few minutes.
  5. Add the pureed tomatoes and cook until the oil separates from the masala.
  6. Add red chili powder and garam masala. Mix well.
  7. Add the cooked lentils and kidney beans to the tomato mixture. Mix and simmer for 20-30 minutes.
  8. Add cream and adjust the seasoning. Simmer for another 10 minutes.
  9. Garnish with fresh cream and serve hot with rice or Indian bread.
