Gujarati-style Dal Makhani
Gujarati-style Dal Makhani is a rich and creamy lentil dish that is a staple in Gujarati cuisine. This dish is packed with flavor and is perfect to enjoy with some steamed rice or Indian bread.
Ingredients
- 1 cup whole black lentils (urad dal)
- 1/4 cup red kidney beans (rajma)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, pureed
- 1 inch ginger, grated
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 green chili, slit
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons cream
- Salt to taste
- 2 cups water
Instructions
- Wash and soak the black lentils and kidney beans in water for 4-6 hours.
- Pressure cook the soaked lentils and kidney beans with 2 cups of water, salt, and turmeric powder for 6-7 whistles or until they are soft and well cooked.
- In a separate pan, heat butter and sauté the chopped onions until they turn golden brown.
- Add the ginger, garlic, and green chili. Sauté for a few minutes.
- Add the pureed tomatoes and cook until the oil separates from the masala.
- Add red chili powder and garam masala. Mix well.
- Add the cooked lentils and kidney beans to the tomato mixture. Mix and simmer for 20-30 minutes.
- Add cream and adjust the seasoning. Simmer for another 10 minutes.
- Garnish with fresh cream and serve hot with rice or Indian bread.
